Environmentally Friendly Apartments Columbia MD

Cleaner, Healthier Living

Monarch Mills is Howard County’s premier sustainable community. Our luxury apartments were constructed with high-quality, sustainable materials to make a beautiful, environmentally friendly community. We are the first multi-family community in Howard County to meet Enterprise Green Communities criteria in every apartment. In addition, our clubhouse received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Going green is an investment in the future; and Monarch Mills is committed to making green, healthy living a reality for our residents.

The designers, general contractor, sustainability consultant, and the owner worked together to achieve points in the following categories:

Water Conservation

We use Energy Star Rated appliances designed to conserve water. These appliances include dishwashers and clothes washers. In addition, we use water-conserving fixtures on our toilets, showerheads, and kitchen and bath faucets.

Energy Efficiency

Our community has Energy Star Rated appliances and lighting. Our HVAC system is also high efficiency to reduce energy consumption.

Sustainable Site

We have implemented erosion and sediment control to protect the surrounding lands and bodies of water. Our storm drains have labels that act as a reminder that our site falls within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. For water conservation, we irrigate our landscaping with cisterns that harvest rain. We have also planted native species to help protect the ecosystem.

Beneficial Materials

To reduce the construction waste, over 75% of the waste was recycled. The clubhouse has roof shingles designed to reduce the heat island effect.

Healthy Living Environment

None of the paints, primers, adhesives, or sealants used in the community contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds), such as formaldehyde. The composite wood for the kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and interior doors is urea formaldehyde-free. The carpets have green label floor coverings and the bathrooms are equipped with smart fans to reduce the potential for mold.
